CHANGES CAN BE FOR THE BETTER IN FEEDING OUR PETS

“People, especially in politics, are accused of changing their affiliations and/or ideas from one year or decade to another.  If it is for betterment of America and its citizens, then change is good.  If it is for the accumulation of wealth and power, to the detriment of the people they serve, then it is ingenuous and corrupt.”  -anonymous

Allow me to segue that thought into the feeding of my pets.  Feeding my cats has remained constant over the past half century, although the quality has improved with knowledge.  They get canned food morning and night.  Not only is that important for hydration, especially as cats age, but for their pleasure, and it helps to mask medicine like Methamazole that Mystery gets twice a day.  Dry kibble is always available in a mixture of many different brands and flavors.  I use paper bowls as their saliva is not the most pleasant smelling and I need not wash.  Wet food is put in stainless steel or ecoware bowls that I thoroughly clean.  I put their dry food on a cat climber or blanket box, so the dogs don’t eat it.  Cat food is much higher in fat and protein and that is why dogs like to eat cat poop.

Feeding my dogs, on the other hand, has change dramatically.  I was a diehard advocate of feeding dogs twice a day with the larger meal being in the morning, as the dogs had time to utilize the calories during the day, and the smaller meal at night when they were more sedate.  I remember Joe Brooks, our groomer, bless his soul, telling me that he fed his band of Shih Tzus once a day at 3 p.m., and my thinking that was odd.  Now I may seem even more at odds with the norm.

I have stopped giving them kibble, even our very reputable brands.  Instead, in the morning my dogs get an assortment of quality treats after Zoey gets her Addison’s pill.  Bob is the official morning treat giver to keep Ebby’s attachment to him.  I remind him not to give them too many even if they give him those “eyes.”  Occasionally they may get a small midday treat.  I begin preparing their evening meal around 7:30 after I have fed the cats and Bob and I have finished our dinner.  Feeding you and your family before the dogs ensures that they understand who the Alpha member(s) is.  What I do may seem too time consuming, but it takes less time than it takes Bob to prepare his morning smoothie.  In round Our Pet stainless bowls I add the appropriate amounts of Ultra Oil (skin and coat), Glandex powder (anal gland health) and CBD oil, (health and temperament.) Then I add a 1/3-1/2 loaf of MY PERFECT PET, lightly cooked frozen food which I top with various Stella and Chewy freeze-dried Wild Weenies, Meal Mixers, and organ meat like hearts or liver.  The more organ meat you give your pet the better.  I also add for Zoey some Dr. Marty’s, and for Ebby, Dr. Goldstein’s Earth Animal Wisdom.  If I try out a new canned or pouch wet food, I put it in a separate bowl.  In the event they don’t like it I have not put them off their regular meal and therefore don’t waste more than necessary. To get them stimulated, I start them off with a piece of turkey tendon or a kennelmaster chicken chip.  Ebby will usually devour all her food, while Zoey, nestled by my side on the couch, will not eat until I put her on my bed at night sometime between 10:30-11:30.  And even then, I may have to entice her with a piece of Loving Pet Duck, part of which I crumble on top of her bowl.  If she still refuses, I wrap it and put it in the refrigerator.  Dogs WILL eat if they are allowed to be hungry enough.  Their bedtime treat is always a dental chew. Generally, dogs will eat more in winter than summer for added fuel to keep them warm.
