PURINA PRO PLAN DOG FOOD
This is not a very good food, and one which I would not recommend nor ever feed to my dogs. The first thing to remember is their advertising campaign. It cost tons of money to advertise on television and full-page ads in numerous magazines. And who pays for that? Your pet by eating inferior food products and treats (the entire Purina line.) Purina cannot realistically give you quality healthy ingredients, charge a reasonable price for the products AND cover all their costs. This message pertains to all the grocery, dollar store, and foods sold by stores that only care about the bottom line. It is easy to fool consumers but not so easy to show how they have been fooled. You need to look at and understand the ingredient panel and what is fact and what is fiction. I had a heck of a time just locating the ingredients on Pro Plan as the computer kept redirecting me. Finally, I found a blog called PURINA PRO PLAN INGREDIENTS/RetrieverPro which not only lists but explains the value of each ingredient. Too many grains, too little actual protein, and an unidentified mystery fat (what animal and from where, containing what diseased or contaminated parts?) Their overall opinion is that this” dog food is garbage.”
Purina Pro Plan just had a recall this past February-and then expanded the middle of this month, because of elevated levels of Vitamin D in their Animal and Vet Diets El Elemental, caused by a U.S. supplier. Vitamin D toxicity can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, to renal (kidney) dysfunction. It is recommended that you stop feeding this pet food immediately or any substandard food that may be causing such symptoms and contact your vet.
We get plenty of great feedback from customers who have changed from feeding such diets as Beneful, Pedigree, anything Purina, Royal Canin, Nutrish, and Blue Buffalo. This includes crappy treats like Pup-Peroni and Milk Bones original. One of our new employees was complaining that her dog was constantly licking its paws. We encouraged Krystle to switch to Victor, one of our more reasonably priced dog (and cat) food-given a 5 star by Dog Food Advisor. She wrote me a letter and asked that we post it.
“Until I came to work at The Wagging Tail, I was feeding my dog Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. She was licking her paws all the time. Patsy and Alli recommended I switch to Victor’s. Within less than one week the paw licking has completely stopped. She digests the food better. Her skin has no irritations, and her coat is super shiny. I highly recommend the Victor brand for dogs of all ages and sizes. And I discovered that proceeds from each bag go to Veterans and their war dogs. This company completely has their act together! The price of Victor’s is very reasonable. I get an employee discount and you as a customer would get a free bag after 12 purchases, or our Sunday discount for veterans and seniors (55 and over.) I also stopped feeding beggin’ strips when Patsy and Alli pointed out that they are full of carcinogenic ingredients like sodium nitrate and BHA and artificial colors and flavors. They also have the fillers wheat, soy and corn in them, which added to my dog’s allergies. Now I give her our Wholesomes Bruno’s jerky sticks, among others I am learning about. Between the treats and the Victor, my sweet girl is one healthy, happy pup! Thank you The Wagging Tail for helping Pixie and me. If my dog’s happy so am I.”
