MILK BONES: I STILL SAY “BAD” STUFF

I don’t know whether it is because they read my articles (haha) but Milk Bones have undergone a rebirth leaving out some of the dangerous, offensive items listed in my previous evaluation of the product: Poultry-by-product meal which is like the scapings off the slaughterhouse floor, artificial colors which are linked to cancer, behavior problems, and hyperactivity, and artificial flavor which entices a pet to eat an inferior food or treat. There are lots of fillers, like wheat flour (first two ingredients) and no proper or healthy protein. And many bad items have not been deleted.

They have not deleted the preservative Dicalcium Phosphate (DCP) which can cause calcification of soft tissue and can lead to kidney stones. Nor have they deleted Sodium Metabisulfite, another preservative. Sodium Metabisulfite can cause severe allergic reactions (perhaps your dog is suffering from allergies right now due in part to Milk Bones.) Sodium Metabisulfite also reacts with acids in the stomach to release toxic sulfur dioxide gas. Sodium Metabisulfite can cause issues with the nervous and circulatory systems, and gastrointestinal tract. MILK Bones also contain MEAT AND BONE MEAL, as before, without identifying WHAT MEAT AND BONE MEAL. What animals, and from where? Milk Bones continue to use BHA and BHT as preservatives which are known to be linked to cancer. Both chemicals are used in cosmetics! Both chemicals “have been flagged for future assessment under the government’s Chemicals Management Plan.” No reputable pet company would use any of the aforementioned ingredients. And, to add insult to injury, you the consumer are paying for them to advertise these awful products that you buy.

The peanut flavored Milk Bones are no better, even using artificial peanut butter flavor! Apparently, they use bacon fat, which would appeal to dogs and their caregivers. Yet they have all the bad stuff that were in the original Milk Bones, like lots of artificial dyes and BHT and BHA.

The Peanut Butter Coated Milk Bones do not have any terrible ingredients. I would just not want to feed added sugar (especially to already hyper dogs) or added salt, which is just as bad for them as it is for us. They are still not as good as our $7.99 three-pound bags of peanut biscuits, which are grain free (less fattening) and have real protein. As well as our whole line of the Sportmix Brand, including, bacon, cheese, charcoal (good for gas and breath,) puppy and regular dog up to Jumbo. And no advertising expenses added into the bag!

A woman came into the store this morning to get her dog groomed. Her golden is nine and is suffering from dry, itchy skin. No doubt the food. (And I recently wrote an article about how Goldens are dying younger and younger, and a lot has to do with diet.) Years ago, when I met my husband, he was feeding Beneful as well. I put his Border Collie on a better food. Two weeks later he went back to Colorado for business and took Bonaparte to his old groomer. She commented to him when he picked up Bonaparte, “What have you been feeding Bonaparte? His skin and coat are so much better.” And that was just after two weeks. Ebby, my foster turned rescue, was being fed Pedigree (mostly the wet) and boy did she smell. It took weeks of being fed a better diet (with me) to get rid of the stink! Now if only I could put a raincoat on her without getting bitten! Still a work in progress, but lots of kisses.
